Problem Gambling__.JPG (87958 bytes) - The Addicted Gambler -

Eastern Iowa Center for Problem Gambling, Inc., bases its gambling treatment program on the reality that the compulsive or problem gambler is addicted to gambling.  There is a compelling need for him or her to wager or, "be in action", as many compulsive gamblers themselves describe their addiction.  Thus family, friends, employment, hobbies, finances and self esteem all become secondary to the next bet, the next big chance, or the next game.  "The cardinal features of compulsive

gambling are loss of control, emotional dependence, and interference with normal functioning." (The National Council on Problem Gambling)

Intervention

Successful treatment requires that the client sincerely acknowledge the need for help and admit how gambling has effected them.  Most eventually come to this realization themselves.  But a common feature of a gambling addiction is to deny that the problem exists.   Intervention can be facilitated by our staff and guidance given to family members.

Treatment

Each client is comprehensively evaluated and assessed for problems, needs and strengths.  Treatment includes individual and group counseling, family counseling and often budget and crisis counseling.  We have excellent financial advisors who will provide you with a personal and family budget, along with help developing a plan for restitution   Counseling is outpatient, costs are according to the persons ability to pay (sliding fee scale), and there is an aftercare program.

Staff

The Eastern Iowa Center for Problem Gambling, Inc. is a non profit entity that exist to provide professional counseling to persons effected by problem gambling and develop public awareness and outreach programs.  Our seven staff members have accumulated more than 45 years of experience helping problem gamblers and concerned persons.

Concerned Persons

Close family members/concerned persons are adversely effected by the phenomena of compulsive gambling by virtue of their close relationship to the gambler.  The staff provides a counseling program to support and educate the concerned person and includes individual and group counseling, crisis contact, support and aftercare counseling.

Gamblers Anonymous - Forging The Link

Our Approach for recovery rests for the problem gambler on the conviction that the greatest hope for lasting change and abstinence lies in active participation in the Twelve Step Program of Gamblers Anonymous.  Treatment affords those suffering from compulsive Gambling an ideal opportunity to forge this vital link.
